  • BUDGETING

    Determine which initiatives require additional budgetary considerations and approvals

    For projects with custom scenic builds or large waste impacts, budget for recycling pickups by an outside company to ensure that the waste diversion goals are being achieved and project is compliant with local recycling laws for businesses

  • Use digital and paperless methods to communicate

    Use electronic signatures and programs

    Use digital job folders such as dropbox or google drive for shared files

    At the beginning of a project, notify artists, freelancers and suppliers about the  sustainability goals and action steps which are requested of them

    Include the creative blood sustainability memo and specific requests on all call sheet emails or pre-shoot correspondences with crew and suppliers

  • Limit printing, decide which documents or sections are essential to print

    Expand margins of your documents to fit more onto a page

    Use paper that is at least 30% post-consumer recycled content, choose 100% if available

    Set your print default settings for black and white double-sided

    Print booklets whenever possible for contact lists, schedules, creative boards

    Save all single sided printed pages to use as scrap paper for taping receipts

    Recycle all unusable paper and all empty ink and toner cartridges

  • ENERGY CONSERVATION

    Turn off computers, printers, copiers and other electronics when not in use

    Program office thermostats to avoid excessive heating or cooling

    Avoid using space heaters, fans or other energy inefficient appliances

    Make sure lights and heating or cooling units are not operating on evenings and weekends

  • Plan ahead for ground shipping, avoid express and overnight shipping

    Encourage taking public transportation to work, create incentives if possible

    Schedule pick ups and runs to take place at off peak traffic hours for maximum time efficiency and fuel economy

  • Set a project goal to reduce and divert production office waste by 50% and track how that is achieved in the wrap tracking form

    Request that freelancers bring a reusable water bottle to work and use cups, glasses and mugs to prevent waste

    Instruct pa’s to use reusable shopping bags for all runs and avoid plastic bags

    Choose take away meals with minimal waste. When ordering, decline napkins, cutlery, sauces or other unnecessary disposable items

    Avoid polystyrene completely and minimise plastic

  • Collect all electronic waste and manage it properly (ink cartridges, batteries, electronics, media) Electronic recycling centres can be found here

    Recycle all paper, cardboard and drinks containers

    Recycle additional mixed plastics and metals discarded at the office (may require a conversation with building manager or office manager to determine which items can be collected)

  • During pre-production, work with the department heads to identify potential reusable materials and make a back-end plan to manage them successfully. Examples include hangers, bubble wrap and lighting gels

  • Speak with the production designer or art director about the end plan for any constructed sets or backgrounds being used

    If they have no plan for reuse, work together to develop a plan for donation to local creative organisations

  • Ask photographers to use energy efficient lighting packages, prioritising led or plasma fixtures rather than standard fixtures

    Ask photo assistants to make a plan for discarded reusable lighting expendables such as gels, diffusion, clips etc. These are valuable to film schools, even in small amounts

  • Request that stylists make a plan to recycle all plastic bags and garment packaging, and collect reusable items such as hangers, pins, tags and fasteners

  • Rent biodiesel generators in markets where they are available

  • Choose motorhomes and production trailers with solar hybrid generators or solar assisted technologies in markets where they are available

    Notify all suppliers in advance that they are requested to adhere to local idling laws

DEPARTMENTS AND SUPPLIERS

ON-LOCATION GUIDELINES

  • Pack recycling bins as part of the production kit (bins for catering, craft service, and near the set as well as work areas with the most people)

  • Use berkey water dispensers with refill jugs to avoid the use of single-use plastic bottles on set

    Hand out creative blood reusable bottles for all crew to use on set

    Determine the correct signage to put on recycling bins based on what can be collected and managed at each location. In some areas, plastic and metal are collected separately from paper and cardboard

    Print signs for set and laminate them

    Affix signs to all recycling bins with binder clips or tape

  • Create recycling stations by placing recycling bins next to each general waste bin, and remove general waste bins that are not next to recycling bins

    Use clear bags for recycling

    Production assistants should monitor recycling throughout the entire shoot day, ensuring that sorted materials are in respective bins and bags are changed when full

    Ask the studio manager to ensure sorted materials are properly recycled rather than disposed as trash

  • When possible, create a process for composting food waste and soiled paper products on set. This requires appropriate bins, signage, and a plan to drop off or have a specialist company pick up from set.

TRAVEL GUIDELINES

  • Choose rail travel for short trips within the uk and europe

    Choose public transport in london, paris, new york and other cities for local and short distance trips

  • Choose direct flights for air travel

    Choose airlines that offer carbon offsets as part of the booking process and select the offset at the time of purchase

  • Choose car services with electric, hybrid and flex fuel vehicles where available - addison lee offer this as an option

    Avoid oversized vehicles. Book standard cars rather than people carriers for single passengers with no equipment or excess baggage

    For more efficient local trips, use ride share apps like uberxshare

  • Organise carpools to production locations when leaving the same hotel or origin

    When hiring vehicles for on-location driving or runs, choose hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles

    Require all drivers to follow local idling laws, especially if using splitters or other large vehicle

  • Choose hotels near the shooting location for time and travel efficiencies

    Choose hotels with sustainability policies and environmental accreditations

Creative blood is committed to reducing our waste impacts and diverting as many resources as possible from our production process. We are striving to achieve zero waste by 2020, which is defined as 90% or greater diversion from landfill or incineration. Please use the following guidelines when making food service arrangements.

CATERING GUIDELINES

  • Caterer has a sustainability plan at their kitchen location which includes recycling and composting food waste and sourcing food locally

    Caterer provides reusable plates, cutlery and cloth napkins for lunch service rather than disposable products

    Caterer has a food donation plan for surplus unserved food directly following the meal service and will not discard edible food

    If meals are dropped off, caterer has a plan to minimise meal service waste, avoiding styrofoam and plastic disposable products

  • IF AT ALL POSSIBLE

    Offer vegetarian or vegan only catering on-set as an option to the client. Give an explanation on the Call Sheet to explain to the crew as to why this is being done.

    Ask caterer if they have the capability of providing reusable plates and cutlery for breakfast service

    Ask caterer if they have the capability of adding composting collection for on-set meal impacts, removing food waste and paper discards from set after the meal service (this can incur added costs)

  • Request that caterer drops off unserved meals after the lunch service to homeless shelters or other non-profits that accept prepared food

    A food donation release form should be signed by the non-profit releasing the donor of liability

  • When serving craft service throughout the production,offer snacks that can be enjoyed without disposables

    Serve sugar, milks and other condiments in larger volume containers rather than individual packets

    Avoid plastic or wooden stir sticks for hot beverages, instead use metal spoons

    Use refilling dispensers, jugs of water and glasses to avoid disposables

    If serving bottled water, choose locally sourced water to avoid the carbon footprint from bottled water that is shipped internationally

STUDIO GUIDELINES

  • BOOKING GUIDELINES

    Choose studios that are already recycling as part of their company’s internal operations, in compliance with local laws for businesses. Before booking the space, inquire about recycling capabilities

    Recycling bins are available on site for productions (may incur additional charges)

    Request clear liners, and signage depicting which materials can be collected

    Request that the studio manager instructs their floor team to properly manage the materials during the cleaning process instead of throwing it all away as general waste at the end of a shoot

    The studio accommodates requests to have composting picked up by a specialist company if they do not offer composting to clients

  • Set the goal to reduce and divert a minimum of 50% of the waste generated, and place recycling bins in all production areas with clearly labeled signs indicating which materials are being collected.
